Oilcanning and Backer Rod

Because Standing Seam panels are flat and not corrugated, slight variations in sub-surface or tensions from bending and seaming put minute twists and warps in the metal panels. This is  called oilcanning. Every Standing Seam roof has this inherent  property and it is normal for all roofs to show some. 

To combat this, Bradford Standing Seam offers the option of a Backer Rod installation. A 1/2" diameter foam rope is installed under the middle of each pan which forces a slight convex camber into each pan and eliminates about 80% of the oil canning. We are happy to give you this option as a line item to your bid. 

Solar Panels

Standing Seam Roofs are the first choice for installation of nearly all Solar Energy Systems. There are some self adhesive collectors made especially to lay on the flat surfaces of the roof.  Special clamping systems are available so that normal collectors can be attached directly to the roof without violating the roof's surface with numerous holes.
